Why did some group (with media/institution dominance) feel the need to create so much propaganda to blacken the name of Napoleon?

Given my interest in Napoleon, I’ve heard innumerable times about how he was a tiny angry man with something to prove - another Hitler. These “thoughts” were CLEARLY deliberately programmed into a mostly uneducated public ON PURPOSE but why?
