Due diligence is what a lawyer is SUPPOSED to do to ensure he is not harassing an innocent citizen with a frivolous lawsuit.
There are consequences for the lawyer who doesn’t operate with the basic standards of ethics in his profession.
It would be nice if people just could have the integrity to do the right thing. Since that’s too much to ask, rules exists to make sure those in the legal profession actually must work towards Truth and justice or else they can get disbarred.
