When in 1815, the enemies of France used their media to turn tricked people into a threat to her, Hortense had to rely on those same enemies to protect her. It was an Austrian guard that escorted her and her sons into exile. Over time, the Austrian general learned to what degree he had also been deceived about her.

While Hortense was hiding her ailing son from the invading Austrian army years later in 1831, the same General came to inhabit the place where she was hiding her son.

The vanguard entered. The palace where I lived, the most beautiful in Ancona, was designated for the residence of the general-in-chief and his staff. I expected that. I had only reserved a few rooms. I had delivered all the salons to make it the general's apartment. In this way I was completely surrounded by Austrians.
A double closed door on my side separated me from the general-in-chief, whose conversations I could have heard, so close were we, and on the other side the soldiers remained in my anteroom with my servants.

The commander of the vanguard, who had come to make the lodgings, wanted to demand the whole apartment. The wife of my nephew's receiver, alone in my confidence, had resisted him, and had ended up naming me.
Instantly he softened, inquired about my news with interest. By chance, it was the same man who, in 1815, when my children and I were in danger at Dijon, had me sent by the Austrian general to serve as a safeguard against the fury of a party.
Alas! I remembered my pain then, to have had to fear the French, and to see the enemies of my country become my protectors against compatriots.
At that moment I rediscovered, in the Austrian colonel, that benevolence which one always grants to those whom one has once helped.

When we had fully convinced them that my son had been gone for two days, that I was alone, ill and unhappy, that there was no kind of consideration that people had for me, the general-in-chief asked to see me; I told him that I would receive him as soon as my health permitted. However, my son's illness was taking its course.
My surveillance only became more active. The slightest thing could betray us. If he coughed I had to shut his mouth. I kept him from speaking, a male voice was so easy to hear by all around us.
Will you believe it? I care so much about honesty that I almost felt remorse for deceiving those who trusted in me. It is easy to think that this remorse did not go so far as to confide in them what I had so much interest in hiding from them, but I would have been more satisfied to find them less accommodating.
