This is Hortense Bonaparte’s story about the many traps that were created to derail youth with good intentions. At this point, Hortense has lost one son to measles and her other son Louis Napoleon Bonaparte is also sick, as she is trying to hide him from the authorities.
Hortense writes:
We saw all the debris of this little army arrive. They came to take refuge in Ancona with the hope of still resisting. At the gates they learned that the city was returned to papal authority.
I owe them the justice to say that the impotent situation into which they were cornered was even more painful to them than the loss of their hopes.
My sick son, who had just lost so much, sacrificed so much for this Italian freedom, was all the more interested in it, and I heard him moan at such an unhappy outcome, and at the helplessness in which he found himself to serve that freedom.
It was then that I saw all the pain that accompanies defeat. This worthwhile youth had no choice but between irons or flight; combat and death had just been forbidden to them! The gates of the city opened for a moment to receive the fugitives; they only had time to get a passport and get on board.
The orders of Rome could revoke such a benefit, granted without its participation. They were therefore placed between two enemy powers, for the Austrians were to be masters of Ancona within two days.
The envoys of the legate, who announced to them the submission of the city and who begged them not to advance, had not been received at all. It was necessary to prepare to receive the law of the victor.
Two ships remained in the port and became the only resource of all these unfortunate people.
Would we believe it? The price of places rose because of the need that so many unfortunate people had, and it became impossible for this youth, who had given up for freedom, fortune, family and all the pleasures of life; it became impossible for most of them to pay for their passage. Many came to me, and I was happy enough to be able to be of service to them.
