This French language movie is actually fair to the Emperor

Much of this film was shot at the locations where the events actually took place. They didn’t invent too much dialogue but they did invent a scene where Hortense confesses her adoration for Napoleon. I do think Hortense was obvious in her adoration of him.

Napoleon was obvious about his adoration for her as well. At their final parting (in the memoirs/not this film), Napoleon left Hortense trying to pull every lever he could to try and get her to follow him to where he was going.

She had to do what she could to protect his heirs for the future. Getting murdered along with Napoleon would not have fulfilled Napoleon’s true aim. She was CERTAIN they would kill him. She reared the best Napoleon she could in her son Louis Napoleon who became Napoleon III. You know Napoleon III must have done good because he is so poorly honored by the present establishment. The man who made Paris the most beautiful city in the world (Napoleon III, with much help from his uncle) is only honored in Paris by a tiny tin plaque near a train station in Northern Paris. Yet the whole place is a monument to his great work.

Vive l’Empereur!
