De Segur shows what happened when Napoleon met his future father in law, the Emperor of Austria

Napoleon’s aide de camp reports that the Emperor of Austria, Francis II, called his perpetual ally, the English government, “salesmen of human flesh” and he promised to stop warring on Napoleon.

The Emperor of Austria did not keep his word. Napoleon eventually married into this Emperor’s family hoping this Emperor would not war on his own daughter and son if they were attached to the fortunes of France.

This Emperor of Austria then warred on his own daughter and grandson. After the Emperor of Austria got control over Napoleon’s son, the Emperor of Austria’s grandson did not survive into adulthood. No one was surprised.

Napoleon’s second wife went along with whatever her father wanted. As long as Napoleon had an Empire, this woman appeared to love him very passionately.

When later, the Austrian government told her to hand over their son, she did it to get what she wanted - her own place in Italy to share with the new lover who magically appeared for her. No one was surprised.
