Napoleon was extremely ambitious. Many believed he was perhaps overfond of his stepdaughter/sister-in-law Hortense.
Napoleon arranged Hortense’s marriage to his brother Louis. Hortense and Louis’ son was reputed to really be fathered by Napoleon. (I believe this is not True.) Very early on in Napoleon’s reign, he made Hortense Queen of Holland. Here you see (from Hortense’s memoirs) how disappointed Napoleon was that Hortense did not share his ambition and she did not value the crown he gave her. She was depressed and her husband was emotionally abusing her.
